How Much CBD Should I Give My Dog?

As with anything you give to your dog, the amount matters. To maximize the benefits and minimize potential side effects, be sure to calculate the correct dosage for your pet. Some research has found that 2 mg of CBD twice a day is a good dosage; of course, it varies depending on your pet’s size and what you’re trying to treat.

It also depends on the type of CBD you give them. Different companies have different concentrations of CBD in their products, affecting the dosage. That’s why we recommend using pure CBD oil or isolate — or better yet, a product specially designed for dogs. (Always check that the CBD product is sourced from 100% organically grown hemp with no more than 0.3% THC.)

In general, though, experts recommend 0.2 mg per pound of body weight. That means that a 15-pound pup gets 3mg. If your CBD oil isn’t 100% CBD (many aren’t), calculate the number of milligrams in each milliliter of oil, based on the strength of the solution. In general:

  • A 75mg formula has 2.5mg of CBD per ml of oil
  • A 150mg formula has 5mg of CBD per ml of oil
  • A 300mg formula has 10mg of CBD per ml of oil
  • A 600mg formula has 20mg of CBD per ml of oil

If you don’t care to do the math, choose something that’s pre-dosed, such as Terra Vida’s Premium CBD Pet Chew Treats, or Oral Drops. Each serving contains 5mg CBD, so you know exactly what you’re giving your pet. However, if you need to adjust the dosage, you’ll probably want quality oil or tincture. For pet owners who would like to add CBD to their dog’s food or to them directly, convenient oral drops offer convenient dosing in a pet-safe solution.

No matter which dosage you choose, start small. For general health, you can probably give your pup the minimum dose and maintain it. For chronic pain or anxiety relief, start with about 1 mg CBD per 10 pounds of body weight, then move up in dosage or give the dose 1-3 times per day. If you accidentally give more than you mean to, don’t worry: there is minimal risk of CBD overdose among dogs.

Wrapping Up

As with any supplement you give your pet, be sure to chat with your veterinarian and ensure that you source the CBD from reputable sources. Once you’ve determined the starting dosage for your pup, monitor their behavior and condition. Then, assess when you need to increase the dosage amount or frequency. In time, you’ll know exactly what your beloved pet needs to feel better.
